A popular food products sold in North Carolina has been recalled over a potential serious health risk.
Turkana Food Inc. has recalled 858 cases of its Aleppo Tahini Sesame Paste due to a possible Salmonella contamination, according to a recall notice shared February 6 by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration.
The recall affects the Aleppo Tahini Sesame Paste with the lot number 120824091 and UPC 854643003054. The impacted products, which have an expiration date of August 2026, were sold in 16-ounce jars with a gold lid and label and were distributed to stores in over a dozen states: Alabama, California, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, New York, New Jersey, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia.
Per the FDA website, salmonella could cause "serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems." Symptoms often include fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain, but more severe illnesses, such as arterial infections and endocarditis, could occur in rare circumstances.
Anyone who purchased the affected item is urged not to consume it and to return it to the place of purchase for a refund. As of February 5, there have been no reports of an illness in connection to the recall.
